Wine and Cheese Evening: "Are Hedge Funds Evil: A View from the Inside"

Wednesday, 07 December 2011

wc-thumbnail.jpgOn November 25th, AGS hosted a presentation and debate on the theme: 鈥淎re Hedge Funds Evil: A View from the Inside鈥. This was part of AGS鈥檚 鈥淲ine and Cheese Evenings鈥, which gather AGS students, alumni and faculty as well as outside guests and specialists in an informal setting around a chosen issue of international affairs.

Presenting the evening鈥檚 topic and animating the discussion was James Vernon, one of the founders of a hedge fund that ranks among the world鈥檚 largest. He gave an insider鈥檚 view and explained how, contrary to the common perception, hedge funds may actually contribute to the world鈥檚 global economic development. 鈥淚t was interesting to get more insight into a subject that does not directly fall within the discipline of international relations but is definitely relevant in order to better understand the global economic landscape鈥, says AGS alumna and study abroad coordinator Jennifer Wright, class of 2009.

quote leftI aim to help my students prepare for life beyond "the groves of academe" - especially how to ask the right questions to work out what is really going on out there. Along the way, they practice writing lucidly and succinctly. It is stimulating teaching such a lively crew. I hope they also find it fun being challenged to analyse the facts without prejudice and to think originally.quote right
